Lead Shoulder Away From Chin

One of the biggest causes of contact issues for good players is having too much axis tilt with the distance wedge shots. You want to have some, but too much moves the bottom of the swing behind the ball. One common way to feel the upper body staying on top of the lower body is to work on the upper body rotating instead of side bending. If the lead shoulder works away from the chin, then the body will have to rotate. If the lead shoulder stays close to the chin, then the body will be going into more side flexion and extension.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This wedge drill is left shoulder away from chin.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:10,000
I've heard this a number of times, but I've recently seen James Seekman use it help with a couple

00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:16,000
players who were struggling on getting too much of this kind of Jackson 5 side tilt happening

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:19,000
for the distance wedges.

00:00:19,000 --> 00:00:23,000
The idea is basically if you get up to the top of the swing, then if you're going to

00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:28,000
stay a more stacked and have your body rotate, then what's going to happen is this

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:30,000
shoulder is going to work away from the chin.

00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:35,000
If this shoulder stays close to the chin, I can still feel like I'm rotating if I'm doing

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:37,000
more of this side bend movement.

00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:41,000
So what ends up happening is you feel like you get to the top of the swing, and then without

00:00:41,000 --> 00:00:47,000
letting your arms come over the top, so still feeling a little bit of that shallow, you're

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:52,000
going to feel like this shoulder moves away from the chin kind of like so.

00:00:52,000 --> 00:01:00,000
From the down the line, you'll see that it doesn't actually look anything different than

00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:04,000
just having good rotation, but if you tend to see more of this pattern, that would be the

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:07,000
shoulder and the chin kind of keeping the same distance.

00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:12,000
So this can be a great way if you're finding that you're sliding in towards the golf ball

00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:16,000
or early extending or having too much of this axis till for what we want to do with the distance

00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:22,000
wedge.

00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:29,000
So it works whether you're doing the 9 to 3 or the shoulder version and can help you with the

00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:31,000
overall rotation mechanics of your upper body.
