Insight - How I Use Video

Every tool can be useful, or harmful, if applied in the wrong way or at the wrong time. In this video, I explain how to use video to get a rough idea about how you create power, how you control the path, and how you control the face during your stock full swing. It is better to go to video as a way to identify your pattern, to monitor progress on a movement, or to look for a specific timing to an issue that you already know exists. Learn how to recognize the phases of movement in this short video.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.399
this insight is looking at how I use

00:00:02.399 --> 00:00:05.279
video I frequently get the question from

00:00:05.279 --> 00:00:07.710
students can you take a look at the vid

00:00:07.710 --> 00:00:11.160
my recent video and I'll usually respond

00:00:11.160 --> 00:00:13.440
ok what's going on you know what are you

00:00:13.440 --> 00:00:14.880
hoping to accomplish from looking at the

00:00:14.880 --> 00:00:17.160
video usually it's because they're just

00:00:17.160 --> 00:00:18.390
lost then they're not really sure what

00:00:18.390 --> 00:00:21.390
they want to do but I try to train my

00:00:21.390 --> 00:00:23.699
students so that they can ultimately

00:00:23.699 --> 00:00:26.099
have a reason for doing anything that

00:00:26.099 --> 00:00:28.710
they're trying to do so the times when

00:00:28.710 --> 00:00:31.679
you want to use video absolutely when

00:00:31.679 --> 00:00:33.570
you feel lost when you don't know what

00:00:33.570 --> 00:00:36.630
pattern you've fallen into when you when

00:00:36.630 --> 00:00:39.090
you're kind of just getting started and

00:00:39.090 --> 00:00:41.700
you don't know how you create speed how

00:00:41.700 --> 00:00:43.320
you control the face how you control the

00:00:43.320 --> 00:00:47.730
path or if you've developed kind of a

00:00:47.730 --> 00:00:49.469
new series of misses and you're just

00:00:49.469 --> 00:00:51.449
your your your drills that have worked

00:00:51.449 --> 00:00:53.039
in the past aren't really solving the

00:00:53.039 --> 00:00:54.120
issue anymore

00:00:54.120 --> 00:00:56.789
you can now use video so in general I

00:00:56.789 --> 00:00:59.730
use video more when things are going bad

00:00:59.730 --> 00:01:02.190
when things are going good so if a

00:01:02.190 --> 00:01:03.719
student tells me hey everything's great

00:01:03.719 --> 00:01:05.939
but I I'm including a video where you

00:01:05.939 --> 00:01:08.610
take a look at it I'll say that's

00:01:08.610 --> 00:01:11.340
probably not the best use of our time -

00:01:11.340 --> 00:01:14.580
to nitpick and figure out hey something

00:01:14.580 --> 00:01:15.390
doesn't look right

00:01:15.390 --> 00:01:17.939
unless it's related to a contact a

00:01:17.939 --> 00:01:21.200
direction and like a performance issue

00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:25.020
that's what I want to use video so when

00:01:25.020 --> 00:01:27.390
when I do get a video and I'm we've

00:01:27.390 --> 00:01:30.840
decided hey I want to look at it and

00:01:30.840 --> 00:01:32.759
identify the pattern there's three major

00:01:32.759 --> 00:01:35.610
areas that I'm going to look at I'm

00:01:35.610 --> 00:01:37.530
gonna look for power I'm gonna look for

00:01:37.530 --> 00:01:38.750
a path and I'm going to look for a face

00:01:38.750 --> 00:01:43.320
so power typically shows up in both the

00:01:43.320 --> 00:01:45.600
face on in the down-the-line camera view

00:01:45.600 --> 00:01:48.750
power is going to show up by about there

00:01:48.750 --> 00:01:51.479
so the movements that the body is making

00:01:51.479 --> 00:01:53.280
to get the club roughly to delivery

00:01:53.280 --> 00:01:55.619
position give me a great idea of how

00:01:55.619 --> 00:01:58.259
this golfer wants to create speed how

00:01:58.259 --> 00:02:00.469
this golfer is going to ultimately

00:02:00.469 --> 00:02:04.469
create power so then we can move on to

00:02:04.469 --> 00:02:07.380
path and path I think is the fun one

00:02:07.380 --> 00:02:09.959
because path kind of blends both ends

00:02:09.959 --> 00:02:11.819
and both camera views so I want to look

00:02:11.819 --> 00:02:14.190
at path foremost base on

00:02:14.190 --> 00:02:16.680
down the line and path is really going

00:02:16.680 --> 00:02:18.750
to show up to me from about delivery

00:02:18.750 --> 00:02:21.120
position to that follow-through position

00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:23.190
between those two I can see what

00:02:23.190 --> 00:02:25.070
movements you're going to use to

00:02:25.070 --> 00:02:28.530
ultimately organize how this club path

00:02:28.530 --> 00:02:33.060
is swinging now club face is the the

00:02:33.060 --> 00:02:35.580
tricky one you're primarily going to

00:02:35.580 --> 00:02:37.250
want to look at down the line and

00:02:37.250 --> 00:02:40.290
clubface is largely going to be from

00:02:40.290 --> 00:02:42.000
right about here so just after

00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:44.520
transition to right about here just

00:02:44.520 --> 00:02:48.600
after delivery position you can see for

00:02:48.600 --> 00:02:51.120
the most part what that golfer is doing

00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:53.700
from the down-the-line camera angle what

00:02:53.700 --> 00:02:55.230
they're doing with their clubface and

00:02:55.230 --> 00:02:57.240
then oftentimes a lot of these things

00:02:57.240 --> 00:02:59.340
that you'll see at impact that kind of

00:02:59.340 --> 00:03:02.730
look odd are really a compensation for

00:03:02.730 --> 00:03:04.620
either a face or a path that's out of

00:03:04.620 --> 00:03:07.200
position or a reaction to how that

00:03:07.200 --> 00:03:10.170
golfer created power so real quick power

00:03:10.170 --> 00:03:13.800
is kind of that first little phase face

00:03:13.800 --> 00:03:16.350
is going to be that middle phase and

00:03:16.350 --> 00:03:19.200
then path is going to be that late phase

00:03:19.200 --> 00:03:21.570
kind of through there the only other

00:03:21.570 --> 00:03:23.820
time that I like to use video is when

00:03:23.820 --> 00:03:25.709
I'm hitting the ball the best that I've

00:03:25.709 --> 00:03:27.810
ever hit it and then I'm not going to

00:03:27.810 --> 00:03:30.150
analyze it I'm just going to capture it

00:03:30.150 --> 00:03:33.000
and save it for that next rainy day when

00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:35.340
my game isn't quite where I wanted to

00:03:35.340 --> 00:03:37.489
and I can use this now as my benchmark

00:03:37.489 --> 00:03:39.959
so don't get obsessed with trying to hit

00:03:39.959 --> 00:03:43.500
perfect positions perfect lines use

00:03:43.500 --> 00:03:46.260
video to get a picture of your overall

00:03:46.260 --> 00:03:48.660
pattern and then use contact and the

00:03:48.660 --> 00:03:50.430
feedback on the range and on the course

00:03:50.430 --> 00:03:52.709
to see if you're actually progressing as

00:03:52.709 --> 00:03:55.050
opposed to looking at video which may

00:03:55.050 --> 00:03:58.380
mask the subtle changes that are really

00:03:58.380 --> 00:04:00.060
critical for the difference between your

00:04:00.060 --> 00:04:01.830
good and your bad shots within any

00:04:01.830 --> 00:04:04.280
pattern
