Insight - Arms Too Soon?

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,000
In this golf smart insight, we're going to look at answering a member question about why is

00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:10,000
it so problematic to get your arms involved too soon in the downswing?

00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:15,000
So we have to do a little bit of anatomy lesson here.

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:20,000
But basically, muscles when they can track, are pretty much just going to pull.

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:25,000
So a muscle is going to pull almost equally from both ends or frequently it will pull

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:26,000
equally from both ends.

00:00:26,000 --> 00:00:32,000
So what usually happens is when you go to accelerate one part of your body like my arm,

00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:36,000
it's going to cause the part that it is attached to to stabilize.

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:41,000
We see this in the kinematic sequence where when I go to, I start with my lower body

00:00:41,000 --> 00:00:46,000
and then when I go to fire my upper body because of the way the muscles attached to

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:49,000
my pelvis, it causes my pelvis to slow down.

00:00:49,000 --> 00:00:54,000
Well the same thing is going to happen at my shoulder girdle on a little bit of a smaller scale,

00:00:54,000 --> 00:01:00,000
because my shoulder muscles are roughly, especially the ones that do this are roughly

00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:04,000
going to go from this part of my arm to kind of the end of my shoulder blade kind of

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:05,000
like so.

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:12,000
So what happens is the muscle shortening here is going to cause this to pull this way,

00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:18,000
but if I also had was in free space, it will cause my body to rotate that way.

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:21,000
Can you see how those two kind of happen together?

00:01:21,000 --> 00:01:28,000
So if I get my arm pulling off my body very early in the downswing, I'm pretty much telling

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:34,000
my rib cage to slow down and stabilize.

00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:39,000
And so what can happen is if that happens too soon in the downswing, then I'm not going

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:43,000
to get my body rotated open enough for when those arms extend.

00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:48,000
So it can cause path issues, angle the tack issues, and it can cause sequencing and power

00:01:48,000 --> 00:01:50,000
production issues.

00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:55,000
All these things are great if I'm hitting a little wedge shot, but they're very problematic

00:01:55,000 --> 00:01:57,000
if I'm trying to maximize my speed off the tee.

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:03,000
So make sure that you use the feedback that you can and the drills that we prescribe in order

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:09,000
to help you work on your sequencing so that your body initiates that transition and then

00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:12,000
your arms don't jump in until the proper time in place.
