Hogan Open Right Thumb

This Ben Hogan inspired drill is excellent for players who struggle with the patterning of the trail arm. Specifically, it is useful for golfers who tend to apply too much pressure with the thumb and "webbing" of the trail hand. This leads to a near "baseball" style grip that can produce a strong club flip at impact, creating issues with contact and start-line.

To alleviate these symptoms, a simple "thumbs off" approach is all that is needed; this will help players load the correct pressure points of the trail hand and hopefully, encourage a "quieter" & more efficient release of the club.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This drill is the open right thumb.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So one of my students I had them do this drill and they said, oh that's the way hooking

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:15,000
used to practice so I don't know I've never been able to fact check it but it seems

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:20,000
reasonable to me so I'm going to call it the hooking open right thumb drill.

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:25,000
And basically this is to help with golfers who have a tendency to use too much of their

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:28,000
thumb or the webbing of their right hand.

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:32,000
Or like a baseball pressure point or pushing on the club more like this with that right

00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:35,000
thumb down or with the webbing of the right thumb.

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:41,000
Instead of pushing on it more with that pressure of that first joint on that index finger

00:00:41,000 --> 00:00:47,000
similar to the alignment stick loading or the finger release or some of the other trail

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:48,000
hand drills.

00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:55,000
So I'm going to when I activate the muscles on the top side of my arm up on this form by pressing

00:00:55,000 --> 00:01:02,000
a lot with either the thumb or again the webbing this will encourage this movement

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:04,000
here on the way through.

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:10,000
If I activate more of the pressure in the middle fingers and connect to the club through

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:16,000
this index finger it'll activate more the inside of the arm kind of like this.

00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:22,000
So what we're going to do is we're going to hit some shots with the thumb no longer

00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:23,000
in contact.

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:26,000
And I want to emphasize that it's the whole thumb.

00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:31,000
What I see a lot of students when I try to do this drill for the first time is they will

00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:36,000
just pick up, they'll just pick the thumb off but not kind of the meaty part.

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:39,000
They won't disconnect from the left thumb.

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:41,000
They'll just pick the thumb up off the grip.

00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:44,000
I want the whole thumb out of commission.

00:01:44,000 --> 00:01:48,000
I want that thumb off the left thumb as well.

00:01:48,000 --> 00:01:55,000
So now I have to get a little more of the control in my fingers there so in my middle

00:01:55,000 --> 00:02:00,000
two fingers gripping there and that index finger pushing on the grip.

00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:04,000
I still feel like I have a lot of control of the club.

00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:08,000
It might feel a little lost if I were to take full swings which you're more than welcome

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:09,000
to.

00:02:09,000 --> 00:02:17,000
But especially down in the release zone, not having the thumb on should have very little impact

00:02:17,000 --> 00:02:22,000
in how well I'm able to do the right hand or the trail hand release.

00:02:22,000 --> 00:02:34,000
So thumb completely off doing either nine to three or again you can do this all the way

00:02:34,000 --> 00:02:35,000
up.

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:40,000
We'll go kind of attend to two.

00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:46,000
So because the key movements of the right hand are more in line with this finger

00:02:46,000 --> 00:02:50,000
and pushing through the inside of the arm taking the thumb off should have very little

00:02:50,000 --> 00:02:53,000
impact on your stock swing.

00:02:53,000 --> 00:02:58,000
If you find that you have a lot of forearm rotation and roll you find that this elbow starts

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:03,000
pointing at the camera kind of like this.

00:03:03,000 --> 00:03:10,000
Then this is a kind of a full proof way to remove some of the power from the right hand

00:03:10,000 --> 00:03:12,000
doing that move.

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:16,000
You may feel if you do too many of these at first that the left hand might get a little

00:03:16,000 --> 00:03:21,000
sore because it's having to do a little bit more work so work yourself up in terms

00:03:21,000 --> 00:03:29,000
of doing reps but this should help coordinate the two hands into doing more of your tour

00:03:29,000 --> 00:03:38,000
release really by removing one of the key culprits that I see with a lot of of poor golfers.

00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:43,000
In particular I tend to see this being a problem for X baseball players more so than any

00:03:43,000 --> 00:03:44,000
other sports.

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:48,000
So even if you don't think you have this problem if you played a lot of baseball I would

00:03:48,000 --> 00:03:53,000
highly recommend trying to hit some shots with that thumb completely out of the way and

00:03:53,000 --> 00:03:57,000
if it becomes hard to do it then it could be an indication that you need to do a little

00:03:57,000 --> 00:03:58,000
bit of release training.

00:03:58,000 --> 00:04:16,000
Okay so now we'll do 9 to 3 solid and we'll do 10 to 2 also solid.

00:04:16,000 --> 00:04:22,000
Now we'll try for the full swing the toughy.

00:04:22,000 --> 00:04:31,000
Now I pulled it a little bit that's one of my tendencies let's try one more full swing

00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:38,000
we'll get it on this one.

00:04:38,000 --> 00:04:41,000
So really good no connection from the thumb.
