Finding Your Visual Alignment - Putting

A drill for finding your optimal putting alignment. Remember, visual alignment trumps physical alignment, so finding a set up posture where a straight put looks straight will help you make more putts.

Okay, another way to tackle this visual alignment problem, especially if you don't want

00:00:05,000 --> 00:00:10,000
to go through the whole formality of bringing someone in, I think that that is the better way,

00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:12,000
but this way you can work well too.

00:00:12,000 --> 00:00:16,000
You're going to set up to a medium length short put, so five to eight feet somewhere in

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:17,000
that range.

00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:20,000
What you're going to do is you're going to set up to the ball.

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:24,000
Once you get the putter or once you get the ball, the club head behind the ball, you're

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:29,000
going to align yourself so that you're square to the whole while looking at the

00:00:29,000 --> 00:00:30,000
whole.

00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:33,000
Okay, and then what you're going to do is you're going to this look straight to me, so I'm

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:38,000
going to bring my eyes back and what you'll see is that my feet are slightly open and

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:42,000
the ball is actually further back than my instead.

00:00:42,000 --> 00:00:47,000
So contrary to typical putting wisdom, this is the setup where it helps me to see the

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:50,000
ball straight or to see the putt straight.

00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:55,000
So you can do this a few times on a few different length putts and you can get an idea

00:00:55,000 --> 00:00:59,000
of what your eyes tend to prefer as far as how open to get.

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:04,000
And just the general tendency, you guys who are cross dominant or left eye right handed,

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:09,000
will tend to set up more square with the ball in front and guys who are same side dominant

00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:13,000
like myself will tend to set up with the ball more back and they're constantly open to

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:15,000
see the line better.

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:20,000
So give that a try if you had any trouble with the first visual alignment drill for figuring

00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:22,000
out your specific alignment.
