Don't Swing Hard On Uphill Lies

Different lies present different challenges to your stock swing. When facing an uphill lie, even slight you will likely struggle to make the same swing as when on flat ground.

Common misses come from moving the low point backward and the path left. The low point backward can cause fat and thin misses and the path left usually causes pulls and pull hooks, but sometimes push fades.

To improve this, focus on swinging at less than full tempo and less than full distance. You can also preset some of your weight more on your left side, but make sure to match the slope with your pelvis.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,000
This video is don't swing hard on the uphill life.

00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So many golfers struggle with approach shots into the green or second shots off the fair

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:11,000
weight if there's a slight uphill line.

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:15,000
Now the hard thing here is most golfers don't know that they struggle with it.

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:18,000
They just tell me, you know, oh I missed the screen, I missed the screen, I missed the screen,

00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:22,000
I missed the screen and then I'll point out that all of them had a slight up slope and they

00:00:22,000 --> 00:00:24,000
weren't making any adjustments.

00:00:24,000 --> 00:00:30,000
The two adjustments that I want most golfers to make is to not swing hard and to not swing

00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:31,000
as full.

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:39,000
The swing faults that tend to cause problems on uphill lies would be sway, loss of posture,

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:44,000
scoop or more of a roll or even more of a lunge.

00:00:44,000 --> 00:00:48,000
So if you have any of those patterns, you're probably going to have your timing

00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:52,000
thrown off and have those patterns exaggerated by a slightly uphill line.

00:00:52,000 --> 00:00:59,000
So what I want you to do is you're going to practice hitting three quarter shots where

00:00:59,000 --> 00:01:04,000
basically you're taking your backswing up to about shoulder height and hitting almost

00:01:04,000 --> 00:01:11,000
more of a punch style release in order to help control low point.

00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:15,000
If you imagine that you were sitting on a very severe uphill line kind of like this,

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:19,000
you would find that jumping would be really hard and you'd kind of air towards shifting

00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:20,000
into that back foot.

00:01:20,000 --> 00:01:24,000
It's going to be hard for you to really get your weight forward.

00:01:24,000 --> 00:01:28,000
So what may help is staying a little bit more forward to begin with.

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:33,000
So taking your normal stance and then still getting your pelvis level to the slope, but

00:01:33,000 --> 00:01:36,000
shifting it just a bit forward.

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:43,000
Then doing your three quarter swing, even by being a little bit more on top of the ball,

00:01:43,000 --> 00:01:46,000
because it's a slight up slope, you'll still get tons of height.

00:01:46,000 --> 00:01:50,000
So you shouldn't have any issue hitting at the correct distance.

00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:56,000
With the longer clubs like the hybrid and the three would, you'll find that the easiest

00:01:56,000 --> 00:02:01,000
shot to hit off the slight uphill line is a little bit more of an arm dominant kind of

00:02:01,000 --> 00:02:03,000
slap hook.

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:08,000
So getting a little bit more kind of arm and hand speed as opposed to getting tons and

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:11,000
tons of body rotation and body speed.

00:02:11,000 --> 00:02:15,000
Earring on being a little bit more closed or even, or sorry, a little more closed this

00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:18,000
way or maybe even having a little bit more side bend.

00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:23,000
Both of those can help with getting maximum distance and eliminating the big misses

00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:25,000
off the uphill line.

00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:29,000
The big misses are the chunk shot and the puller, the pull hook and those are all

00:02:29,000 --> 00:02:30,000
easier to hit.

00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:35,000
They're all exaggerated by the fact that you're hitting off a slight uphill line.

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:37,000
And it doesn't have to be a lot.

00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:40,000
Even a few degrees can mess up your overall contact.

00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:44,000
So I'm going to swing a little bit more with my arms, less with my body.

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:47,000
And hit it.

00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:48,000
Nice and controlled.

00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:52,000
Didn't get that one to turn over but as long as I aim that at the right side of the

00:02:52,000 --> 00:02:53,000
green, I would have been fine.
