Delivery And Go

This is one of my absolute favorite drills for working on the downswing. It allows you to preset a nearly perfect transition.  Since most golfers make errors in transition, getting into a great delivery position will feel uncomfortable.  You might even have trouble making contact from this loaded position.  But with repetitions, this drill can really help you overcome common release problems like flipping the club and standing up (early extension).

One of the common uncomfortable feels and visuals for golfers is to have to do with your upper body being closer to the ground than where it started. For your upper body to be closer to the ground and you to not hit the ball fat you would have to have your arms work more across your body, the clubface more closed with the motorcycle move, and the body more side bent and rotated through impact.  That combination helps create a good long flat spot and this drill can be a great way to overcome some of the positional and visual fears.  The only thing left is the changes in rhythm that accompany any swing change.

How to do it

Start by standing up and getting into a good arm delivery position.  The trail arm across your chest and bent, the lead arm rotated palm down and the lead wrist flexed.  Then, get into golf posture and do the merry go round with the body.  Without backing your arms up too much, swing through to follow through position.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This release drill is the delivery and go drill.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So you've been practicing with the remote and you've been working on this delivery position

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:13,000
and the delivery position essentially is the end of transition.

00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:18,000
So if you remember the delivery position, it's going to be palm facing up, palm facing away,

00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:22,000
left hand puts it in place. So the right hand has a little bit of a cut or extension.

00:00:22,000 --> 00:00:27,000
The left wrist has a little bit of flatness or flexion.

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:31,000
From here, I'm going to bend forward.

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:33,000
Here's my golf ball.

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:40,000
So from this, I'm going to bend forward so that this forearm would be pointed in line with the golf ball.

00:00:40,000 --> 00:00:47,000
Then I'm going to bump my hips so that my weight is in my left foot and I'm in my good impact position.

00:00:47,000 --> 00:00:51,000
And from here, I'm simply going to extend my arms down.

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:56,000
Now, demonstrate that a couple times and then we'll talk through what it's doing.

00:00:56,000 --> 00:01:01,000
So stand up the delivery position, bend forward cross.

00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:07,000
Good. Extending that right elbow through a good impact position.

00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:11,000
You can combine this with a line drill if you want.

00:01:11,000 --> 00:01:13,000
And head.

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:15,000
Go like so.

00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:22,000
What this works for is this works on getting used to having everything in close and the club up high

00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:25,000
before I release it down to the golf ball.

00:01:25,000 --> 00:01:30,000
If you struggle with your transition or taking the divot after the ball or power,

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:35,000
typically what's going to happen is you're going to get the club very, very low to the ground here.

00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:39,000
And then it's going to kind of sweep through with the ball with my arms fully extended.

00:01:39,000 --> 00:01:51,000
Lacking these levers and these hinges as I go through the ball is losing a big source of power and makes it harder to have the bottom of my swing far enough forward to be really, really solid.

00:01:51,000 --> 00:02:05,000
So the delivery and go drill kind of presets a really good transition and gets over this visual of having your hands ahead of the golf ball when you start to release.

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:11,000
The first time that you do this if you're used to flipping as I did a little bit in that last one.

00:02:11,000 --> 00:02:20,000
If you're used to flipping what'll happen is you'll get here and then two release you'll actually move the handle back like so.

00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:26,000
As opposed to just being here closing the face from that motorcycle move and then extending down.

00:02:26,000 --> 00:02:35,000
So it's a good way to confront the fear of getting your hands ahead of the golf ball and still trying to make solid contact because that's usually the big barrier.

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:40,000
The other thing is if you're used to flipping and you're a decent golfer.

00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:49,000
If you're used to scooping through your release and your decent golfer, it probably means that you stand up because when you scoop or release that gets the club.

00:02:49,000 --> 00:02:57,000
That gets the club very far away from me. If I did that and my upper body was down towards the ground, I'd stick the club in the ground.

00:02:57,000 --> 00:03:04,000
So to get over the fear of sticking the club in the ground, you're going to get in this delivery position.

00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:16,000
You're going to get your chest very close to the golf ball and then you're just going to go and you'll get used to hitting a shallow path into the ball from your chest being very close, which you'll think will make you steep.

00:03:16,000 --> 00:03:23,000
So I've used this a lot to overcome the visual barrier for scoopers and I think it'll help you with your game as well.
