Connecting Unhinge To Body Rotation

Unhinging your wrists during the release is a key shallowing component that many golfers fail to utilize. In this video, see how it relates to body rotation at impact.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
It's truly connecting the unhinged to body rotation.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:07,000
So many golfers submit their swing and say,

00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:09,000
hey, I'm not open enough at impact.

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:12,000
I need to get my body more involved.

00:00:12,000 --> 00:00:16,000
And so there's an important relationship between

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:18,000
what the hands are doing and what the body is doing.

00:00:18,000 --> 00:00:21,000
In this video, I'm going to talk about the importance of

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:25,000
the timing of the unhinged and how it relates to body rotation.

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:30,000
So we'll use a metaphor analogy from tennis.

00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:32,000
Think of it this way.

00:00:32,000 --> 00:00:36,000
If I was playing tennis, we'll say that this is a tennis racket instead of a golf club.

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:39,000
And I'm your my opponent, so I'm hitting it at you.

00:00:39,000 --> 00:00:43,000
If I have the racket handle or the racket pretty much vertical like this,

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:46,000
I'm not going to be able to rotate very hard.

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:51,000
It's going to have to be more of an arm-based shot.

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:54,000
I'm basically going to have to try to get that racket down low.

00:00:54,000 --> 00:00:58,000
And when I rotate, that's going to tend to keep the racket up high.

00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:02,000
Compare that to a top spin forehand where I unhinged.

00:01:02,000 --> 00:01:05,000
And I get that racket head really low.

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:10,000
So now that encourages a whole lot of body rotation to help

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:13,000
deliver the racket to the tennis ball.

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:16,000
How does that work in the golf movement?

00:01:16,000 --> 00:01:19,000
So when we're working on delivery position,

00:01:19,000 --> 00:01:22,000
you'll see that there's a couple key components to it.

00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:30,000
One of the pieces is trying to get this golf club to be a little bit lower than your hands.

00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:36,000
Many people in their delivery position will try to keep the club head high, kind of like so.

00:01:36,000 --> 00:01:41,000
Now from the down the line, you can see if I keep this high,

00:01:41,000 --> 00:01:48,000
if I was also to rotate, that's going to tend to create a steeper path from the face on view.

00:01:48,000 --> 00:01:53,000
If I keep this high, you're going to tend to see a little bit more closed off body rotation.

00:01:53,000 --> 00:01:59,000
If we do the opposite, if I get into this position and I unhing,

00:01:59,000 --> 00:02:05,000
that's going to get that club head low, and that's going to encourage body rotation

00:02:05,000 --> 00:02:07,000
to then steepen it back out.

00:02:07,000 --> 00:02:14,000
From the face on view, if I get that low, that's going to encourage the body rotation on the way through.

00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:21,000
The timing in the unhing is pretty important that it tends to happen kind of around delivery position.

00:02:21,000 --> 00:02:27,000
So I'm working through in my transition sequence, I get into that good kind of delivery position,

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:30,000
and I'm really starting to kind of unhing through here.

00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:36,000
Now a lot of you are going to think, wait, isn't unhinging bad, isn't unhinging more of a cast movement.

00:02:36,000 --> 00:02:43,000
Well, there's, I've got a video on lag that kind of explains the different components to the appearance of lag,

00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:48,000
but what you'll see is that, especially on 3D, but you can see on 2D,

00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:55,000
most golfers will unhing during this phase here, but because of the white movement and because of the body rotation,

00:02:55,000 --> 00:02:59,000
it doesn't have the appearance of a big cast pattern.

00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:04,000
The opposite is golfers who tend to keep the hinge,

00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:12,000
well, typically, release that trail, or release that trail elbow, and kind of straighten the arm soon.

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:23,000
So this has more wrist hinge than that, but this second one has the appearance of having more lag to it.

00:03:23,000 --> 00:03:30,000
The key component to this unhinged, and I have a video called isolating owner that helps talk through the importance of this unhinged,

00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:34,000
and how it helps shallow out the bottom of the swing.

00:03:34,000 --> 00:03:39,000
So if you struggle with kind of diggy contact, you're probably lacking this unhinged.

00:03:39,000 --> 00:03:45,000
But the important thing for this video is understanding the connection between trying to rotate and trying to get that unhinged.

00:03:45,000 --> 00:03:57,000
So if you're struggling with getting body rotation at impact, it could be that you're lacking some of this unhinging movement in the proper time and space.

00:03:57,000 --> 00:04:03,000
The important thing is when you unhing, it doesn't also rotate back out in front.

00:04:03,000 --> 00:04:12,000
So when I unhing, you can see that it still says kind of the club stays parallel to my body, or the club stays well behind as it unhinges,

00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:17,000
that will encourage me to then finish the rotation through the shot.

00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:24,000
So to work on that, I can get into my delivery position, and I can pump that unhing a few times,

00:04:24,000 --> 00:04:32,000
and then the unhing kind of takes the club shallow or low to the ground or underneath the plane,

00:04:32,000 --> 00:04:40,000
and then at the same time, if I rotate my body, that brings it back up and back on top of the plane.

00:04:40,000 --> 00:04:51,000
So if you're on plane, if you're struggling with getting the body rotation, don't neglect the unhing and the timing of when it should happen is kind of just after,

00:04:51,000 --> 00:04:59,000
or part of your delivery position training, but that is a key component to having body rotation at the point of impact.

00:04:59,000 --> 00:05:11,000
One quick note, if you unhing in the ball starts going right, it shows that you're rehinging as part of this cast pattern to help square the club face.

00:05:11,000 --> 00:05:21,000
When you unhing, that'll actually make it easier for you to then supinate and rotate the club or continue the motorcycle in order to square the face.

00:05:21,000 --> 00:05:30,000
So visualizing how these arm movements fit together with the body pivot can ultimately help you overcome some of your big consistency issues.
