Bunker

In the bunker section, we cover all the how to's of set up and swing technique for knocking in close out of the sand. When you're in a bunker, you're not allowed to ground your club. This means that you can't rest the club on the sand behind the ball before you swing. This will make it a little harder to know exactly where the club is going to hit the sand, but luckily, the sand wedge is designed with special bounce to give you a bigger margin of error. 00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
In this video we're going to go over the mechanics of the bunker shot.

00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:08,000
So hopefully we've been practicing your setup position a few times.

00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:12,000
Feel pretty comfortable kind of down here for hitting a bunker shot.

00:00:12,000 --> 00:00:16,000
I'm going to go over some of the details of what we're actually going to do in the swing.

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:20,000
And you'll see that there's a reason why it's war pros would rather miss it in a bunker

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:25,000
than say the thick rough because this shot has a fair amount of margin of air.

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:37,000
And it gives us a reason we'll go to a chance of getting it close compared to hitting out of the really thick rough where you have a lot less control with the club.

00:00:37,000 --> 00:00:43,000
So you've been working on your setup position, toes out, well squat stance.

00:00:43,000 --> 00:00:48,000
The movement of the golf club for a bunker shot.

00:00:48,000 --> 00:00:50,000
There's a couple things that are really critical.

00:00:50,000 --> 00:01:03,000
One if you remember from the bounce video, our goal is to use the bounce in the bunker so that the club went at enters the sand, just kind of slides underneath the ball and the sand pops the ball out of the sand.

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:09,000
In order to do that, you have to make sure that you take away the dig.

00:01:09,000 --> 00:01:17,000
If you remember from that bounce video, opening the face, moving the handle back, moving the handle down, all add bounce.

00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:25,000
So when we make contact with a bunker shot, our club is going to be very, very vertical like so, which helps expose the bounce.

00:01:25,000 --> 00:01:29,000
If like a powerful swing, I get a lot of chef lean.

00:01:29,000 --> 00:01:41,000
Now the club is the the face is turned down and the club is potentially going to dig into the sand, which isn't going to be good because now it makes it much harder for me to control how the ball is going to come out.

00:01:42,000 --> 00:01:51,000
So in order to get the club to actually pass the sand, we're going to use more of the finesse swing than we are going to use the full swing.

00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:56,000
Because if I use a full swing, I get a tremendous amount of leg, right?

00:01:56,000 --> 00:01:58,000
And that doesn't work very well with bunkers.

00:01:58,000 --> 00:02:03,000
With bunkers, we actually want a little bit more of a kind of a drop cast.

00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:14,000
So the other little image to start picturing is that you'll rarely see bunker players who take a really short swing and then try and accelerate from there.

00:02:14,000 --> 00:02:23,000
The reason is if I take a very short swing and I create a lot of speed, there's a very good chance I'm going to have that chef lean that we don't want.

00:02:23,000 --> 00:02:28,000
We want the club to essentially pass the hands through impact.

00:02:28,000 --> 00:02:41,000
Okay, so at the bottom of the swing, you can see that the club is actually going past my body and then the speed of the club is going to help me go into my finished position.

00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:48,000
So you rarely see these short swings because you'd create so much load.

00:02:48,000 --> 00:02:53,000
When I played, bunkers shots always felt like kind of a gravity golf type shot.

00:02:53,000 --> 00:03:05,000
Essentially, we're going to get our hands up pretty high and you're just going to let your arms almost drop straight down so that they, where you're just going to let your arms kind of drop, which allows the shaft to pass in the bottom.

00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:15,000
The other really big critical thing for that I see with bunkers shots is we need to have our speed down in the sand, not up here.

00:03:15,000 --> 00:03:22,000
So in the full swing, we're going to start applying the speed here and then we hit the ball and it kind of slows down pretty quickly.

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:30,000
You tend to see with good bunkers shots that the speed actually looks like it almost increases after they hit the ball.

00:03:30,000 --> 00:03:37,000
That helps get the sand out and that helps control the distance control by establishing a pretty good tempo for me.

00:03:38,000 --> 00:03:59,000
So let's review these setup positions. So squat stance, wall in your ball position for most people it's going to be closer to a driver setup than it's going to be to an iron because if you have the ball too far back, now it's going to be very difficult for me to have a shallow angle of attack with without exposing the dig.

00:03:59,000 --> 00:04:10,000
So anyway, feet turn out squat stance, you're going to take your backswing without having a whole lot of upper body shift, one weight or the other.

00:04:10,000 --> 00:04:20,000
Everything's going to stay more or less centered and then you're just going to let your arms drop and pass your hands so you're going to give it a little bit of speed down at the bottom.

00:04:20,000 --> 00:04:32,000
So I'll work with that with kind of the basics of the bunker mechanics and you'll learn in the drills section how to apply it a little bit better.

00:04:32,000 --> 00:04:45,000
So just keep that in mind, it's a very much a right arm kind of throwing type swing in order to get the shaft to pass at the bottom of the swing.

00:04:45,000 --> 00:04:52,000
So I'll try to do this with the tools and trouble shooting videos having too much shaffling and the bunker is pretty much the kiss of death.

00:04:52,000 --> 00:04:57,000
Like James Seekman talked about in one of the classes I took with him.

00:04:57,000 --> 00:05:07,000
You will never see a good bunker ship was it player in this position getting set up because that's essentially exposing all kinds of dig.

00:05:07,000 --> 00:05:11,000
They will always be more in this straight up and now I completely agree with them.

00:05:11,000 --> 00:05:21,000
So work on getting the right hand a little bit more involved and we'll talk about some of the problems you may face in some of these other drill videos.
