5 Degree Grip Changes

If you are going to have shaft lean at impact, then you need to have the face slightly closed to the path or else you will hit the ball way off to the right. There are only a few movements that close the face to the path. One is the motorcycle/screwdriver movement during transition, the other is turning the club in your hands before you swing. The last one is during the rotation of the forearms through impact, but that is the hardest and least advisable one to mess around with.

In this drill, you will simply react to the curve of the ball and find a grip that gets you to hit a "straight" shot. This doesn't mean that this will be your grip forever, but it lets you know that with your current swing path and direction, there is a grip that will hit a straight shot. As you work on other pieces of the swing, you will be more comfortable making slight grip changes if you go through this exercise.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:06,000
This drill is called 5 degree grip changes. This drill isn't experimental drill while you're

00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:11,000
going through the setup phase. So what I want you to do is you're going to go through the

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:15,000
grip routine and take your normal grip. And then you're going to hit a shot and for the

00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:20,000
purpose of this drill you're going to watch the ball flight and you're going to see what it does.

00:00:20,000 --> 00:00:26,000
If it curves off to the right instead of trying to change your swing path which sometimes I will

00:00:26,000 --> 00:00:30,000
tell you that you should do, I'm going to have you just experiment with the grip so you can

00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:36,000
see the power of where you have the hands on the club and how they affect ball flight. So the way

00:00:36,000 --> 00:00:41,000
you'll do it is you take your normal grip and then you'll take your trail hand or right hand for

00:00:41,000 --> 00:00:46,000
right hand and golfer and you'll grab the club and you'll just relax your fingers so that you can

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:52,000
spin the club five degrees and then re-grip. Now every time you do that you're going to tell me,

00:00:52,000 --> 00:00:57,000
oh man this feels totally weird and I want you to understand that you only change the grip

00:00:57,000 --> 00:01:01,000
five degrees but the weighting of the club is going to feel a very very different.

00:01:01,000 --> 00:01:05,000
Now what you may find is even though the weighting of the club is different you strike the ball

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:10,000
better and it goes you know more in the direction that you're looking for and this is a good

00:01:10,000 --> 00:01:16,000
initial way to fine tune ball flight while you're going through the position layer.
