3 Wood Off The Deck

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:03,000
The struggle shooting video is looking at three wood off the deck.

00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:09,000
So some golfers have more difficulty with specific shots compared to other shots and it

00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:11,000
usually relates to their overall swing pattern.

00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:16,000
So if you're a golfer who struggles with three wood off the deck, this video is designed

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:17,000
for you.

00:00:17,000 --> 00:00:21,000
There are really three keys that I'm looking for when I see a golfer who's struggling

00:00:21,000 --> 00:00:25,000
specifically with the three wood and they may be able to hit it off the tee where you've

00:00:25,000 --> 00:00:27,000
got it pegged up.

00:00:27,000 --> 00:00:31,000
But once you get it on the ground and you need the characteristics that work with

00:00:31,000 --> 00:00:33,000
the three wood kind of falls apart.

00:00:33,000 --> 00:00:38,000
So those three issues that they're typically going to have trouble with are either getting

00:00:38,000 --> 00:00:45,000
steep arms in transition, having a narrowing arc width or having an upper body lunge.

00:00:45,000 --> 00:00:51,000
Those three things produce angle of attack and flat spot or bottom of the swing issues to

00:00:51,000 --> 00:00:53,000
tend to not work very well with the three wood.

00:00:53,000 --> 00:00:58,000
So to help you figure out which one of those you may be struggling with, I'd suggest

00:00:58,000 --> 00:01:03,000
using some video and looking at your overall feedback.

00:01:03,000 --> 00:01:08,000
If you're using video, which you'll look for when you're looking for steep arms

00:01:08,000 --> 00:01:13,000
is in transition, you'll tend to see the shaft get a little bit more vertical or you'll

00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:18,000
tend to see the shaft get vertical compared to the torso.

00:01:18,000 --> 00:01:23,000
So I could have steep arms and be shallow like this and I'll still tend to struggle

00:01:23,000 --> 00:01:28,000
with a three wood or I could be steep arms and steep body and I'll really struggle with

00:01:28,000 --> 00:01:31,000
the three wood because it'll build into that second key.

00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:34,000
And that second key is the narrowing arc width.

00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:40,000
So the arc width is looking at the distance between the grip or the handle and my upper

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:47,000
body and the guys who are really good at hitting these you know, full swings with the three

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:50,000
wood or potentially even the driver.

00:01:50,000 --> 00:01:52,000
They tend to have that increasing on the way through.

00:01:52,000 --> 00:01:57,000
So you'll tend to see this full unhing, you'll tend to see that full arm extension and

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:03,000
you'll tend to see the grip furthest away from them after impact or kind of in this

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:04,000
zone here.

00:02:04,000 --> 00:02:10,000
Golfers who tend to struggle with more of the thin or even top shots will tend to have

00:02:10,000 --> 00:02:16,000
that arc width get wide before they go off ball and then possibly be narrowing it on the

00:02:16,000 --> 00:02:18,000
way through.

00:02:18,000 --> 00:02:20,000
So that would be kind of check number two.

00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:25,000
Make sure I'm not really bending the arms and what will relate to that or make sure I'm

00:02:25,000 --> 00:02:30,000
not narrowing the arc width and what will relate to that is probably the most common

00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:31,000
second of the steep arms.

00:02:31,000 --> 00:02:35,000
But the most common is going to be this four wood lunge.

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:39,000
So the four wood lunge would be the upper body getting a little bit more nose on top of

00:02:39,000 --> 00:02:41,000
the golf ball.

00:02:41,000 --> 00:02:45,000
And so if I continue to have my arms really extend with my upper body on top of the golf

00:02:45,000 --> 00:02:49,000
ball like that, I would tend to have a really steep angle of attack which for a club

00:02:49,000 --> 00:02:55,000
that has so little loft as the three wood it's going to be an issue and for a club

00:02:55,000 --> 00:02:59,000
where I have to control the bottom of the swing with a more shallow path like the three

00:02:59,000 --> 00:03:01,000
wood that's going to be an issue.

00:03:01,000 --> 00:03:07,000
So you can you can use an alignment stick to help you with the upper body staying behind

00:03:07,000 --> 00:03:08,000
the golf ball.

00:03:08,000 --> 00:03:17,000
So essentially putting it in the ground just as a little bit of a spatial awareness

00:03:17,000 --> 00:03:22,000
tool making sure that the upper body stays well behind especially during the release

00:03:22,000 --> 00:03:24,000
not getting forward or on top of it.

00:03:24,000 --> 00:03:29,000
As far as the shallow arms we've got a number of drills to help you work on practicing

00:03:29,000 --> 00:03:33,000
the shallow arm movement as well as the arm extension.

00:03:34,000 --> 00:03:41,000
When it all comes together it will allow you to do something simple such as just brushing

00:03:41,000 --> 00:03:44,000
the ground while the upper body stays behind.

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:47,000
If you have a hard time brushing the ground right where the golf ball is going to be when

00:03:47,000 --> 00:03:51,000
your upper body stays behind you're probably suffering from one of these three and it's

00:03:51,000 --> 00:03:54,000
going to show up with your contact with the three wood.

00:03:54,000 --> 00:04:00,000
So if I did kind of a slow motion demonstration and then I'll hit one at full speed but if I'm

00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:06,000
doing a slow motion demonstration try to get a little more square to the camera.

00:04:06,000 --> 00:04:12,000
You'll tend to see there's that shallowing of the arms that upper body staying behind

00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:17,000
and actually working a little bit behind and then as I extend those arms on the way

00:04:17,000 --> 00:04:21,000
through you'll see the club just bottom out and brush the ground.

00:04:21,000 --> 00:04:26,000
You can always use your your finding and brushing the ground as home base and just work

00:04:26,000 --> 00:04:31,000
on getting the club to brush the ground which will work with all the clubs with a three

00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:35,000
wood you just have to make sure that it's brushing kind of very gently and well forward

00:04:35,000 --> 00:04:41,000
of where the upper body is.

00:04:41,000 --> 00:04:52,000
So demonstrating making sure that my upper body works behind and you'll see the evidence

00:04:52,000 --> 00:04:58,000
kind of of that scuff turf right around there to make sure that I know that I got the

00:04:58,000 --> 00:05:04,000
club to brush the ground means I probably had my arc width under control and I know

00:05:04,000 --> 00:05:08,000
that my upper body stayed behind because I've used the shaft as a reference and so I know

00:05:08,000 --> 00:05:10,000
what it feels like to keep that upper body behind.

00:05:10,000 --> 00:05:13,000
So now we'll take a look at it in slow motion.
