3 Ways To Fix Your Slice

This troubleshooting guide can be a big help for players wishing to rid themselves of a slice. By using a simple hierarchy of face-path-sequencing, we can start to peel back the layers on this troublesome pattern. For golfers who do not fall into this category, please feel free to give it a shot; it is still a useful exercise for dialing in ball-flight and "connecting the dots" between these (3) swing characteristics.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:08,000
Let's dive into three ways that you can fix your slice.

00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:14,000
Slice is one of the more frustrating but more common patterns and there's a couple different

00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:16,000
common ways that we can solve it.

00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:23,000
Number one is to understand the club face, the face-to-path relationship, which is basically

00:00:23,000 --> 00:00:28,000
if the ball is curving off to the right, that means that the face is open to the path.

00:00:28,000 --> 00:00:35,000
What that means is if I had a club going like this in space, the club face would be

00:00:35,000 --> 00:00:40,000
pointing right of the target, just like a drop shot or like a slice shot in tennis.

00:00:40,000 --> 00:00:46,000
So the club face is matching my hand and it's basically cutting across the ball like this.

00:00:46,000 --> 00:00:50,000
So then what would happen is if I swung the club at the target but the club face was

00:00:50,000 --> 00:00:54,000
open, the ball would start right and curve right.

00:00:54,000 --> 00:01:00,000
So then golfers will instinctively swing this drop shot left so that now the club face

00:01:00,000 --> 00:01:05,000
is pointing at the target but because the path of the club is going on to the left, it's

00:01:05,000 --> 00:01:07,000
starts curving off to the right.

00:01:07,000 --> 00:01:12,000
In fact, the more that the ball curves, that's a simple recipe for telling you how

00:01:12,000 --> 00:01:14,000
much the club face was open.

00:01:14,000 --> 00:01:17,000
Peace number two is the path.

00:01:17,000 --> 00:01:22,000
If I have a path that is way outside in, then my brain is probably not going to let me

00:01:22,000 --> 00:01:26,000
close the face because I might hit it over on the road way over there.

00:01:26,000 --> 00:01:31,000
So I need to get my path closer to neutral to match up a club face that's going to be

00:01:31,000 --> 00:01:32,000
a little bit closed.

00:01:32,000 --> 00:01:35,000
You don't have to get it all the way into out and hit a draw.

00:01:35,000 --> 00:01:40,000
You could just hit a nice little fade but I think that it can be helpful to exaggerate

00:01:40,000 --> 00:01:47,000
it and get the path actually inside out to feel closer to a more neutral path.

00:01:47,000 --> 00:01:49,000
And then the third one is for you rhythm golfers.

00:01:49,000 --> 00:01:51,000
We're going to look more at tempo.

00:01:51,000 --> 00:01:57,000
Sometimes what happens with a golfer slices it is that they're going to go really aggressive

00:01:57,000 --> 00:02:03,000
with the upper body and pull down on the handle, opening the club face in transition and

00:02:03,000 --> 00:02:07,000
by going hard with the upper body, they're going to tend to swing a little bit more

00:02:07,000 --> 00:02:08,000
outside in.

00:02:08,000 --> 00:02:13,000
So rhythm wise, we're going to work on getting the legs to lead a little bit more and

00:02:13,000 --> 00:02:15,000
the club to wait a little bit longer.

00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:19,000
And as I'm waiting for the club, it's going to tend to shallow out or swing a little

00:02:19,000 --> 00:02:20,000
bit more from the inside.

00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:24,000
So let's tackle those in what I think is the priority.

00:02:24,000 --> 00:02:27,000
Priority number one, if you're trying to eliminate a slice, you have got to get the club

00:02:27,000 --> 00:02:29,000
face more close to the path.

00:02:29,000 --> 00:02:35,000
So if I get set up normal, just like this, I've got the club pretty much straight up

00:02:35,000 --> 00:02:37,000
and down even with my spine.

00:02:37,000 --> 00:02:40,000
And usually what I'll do is down in impact position like this.

00:02:40,000 --> 00:02:43,000
I'll say, all right, golfer is what I want you to do.

00:02:43,000 --> 00:02:46,000
It's show me where you're going to get the club face at impact if you didn't put your

00:02:46,000 --> 00:02:47,000
hands forward.

00:02:47,000 --> 00:02:51,000
Basically, if I was just here and then I went to impact what would happen.

00:02:51,000 --> 00:02:57,000
Well, if I just changed the club face, what you see is that would turn it about 30 degrees

00:02:57,000 --> 00:02:58,000
closed.

00:02:58,000 --> 00:03:02,000
Now, it's you're probably looking to yourself like, that can't be right.

00:03:02,000 --> 00:03:04,000
It's got to be coming back straight.

00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:09,000
But if I turn it 30 degrees closed, but then I put my body in impact position.

00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:12,000
Now I've created my hands a little bit more forward.

00:03:12,000 --> 00:03:16,000
And now you can see that the club is a little bit behind me, but it's square.

00:03:16,000 --> 00:03:21,000
So what'll naturally happen is when you use your body and try to hit the club or hit

00:03:21,000 --> 00:03:24,000
the ball, you'll get your hands a little bit more forward.

00:03:24,000 --> 00:03:28,000
And when you get your hands more forward, that's going to instinctively point the face a little

00:03:28,000 --> 00:03:29,000
bit more to the right.

00:03:29,000 --> 00:03:35,000
So the average is that pros are going to rotate the club face closed somewhere around 30 degrees.

00:03:35,000 --> 00:03:40,000
Most of my students who I find slice the ball basically keep the club face the same

00:03:40,000 --> 00:03:44,000
and try not to let the club face change at all during this wing.

00:03:44,000 --> 00:03:49,000
So now we're going to go through just a quick little drill to start feeling that club face

00:03:49,000 --> 00:03:50,000
closed.

00:03:50,000 --> 00:03:52,000
And we're going to dial it in at two different spots.

00:03:52,000 --> 00:03:57,000
You can dial it in right here at Chef Parallel in the downswing.

00:03:57,000 --> 00:04:00,000
So we're going to do a little half swing where we're just going to bring it back to belly

00:04:00,000 --> 00:04:03,000
button height and then belly button height.

00:04:03,000 --> 00:04:07,000
So at this first checkpoint, we're going to bring it back and then we're going to rotate

00:04:07,000 --> 00:04:10,000
the club face closed about 30 degrees.

00:04:10,000 --> 00:04:14,000
And from here, we're going to rotate the body through.

00:04:14,000 --> 00:04:21,000
But keep that club face turning so that it's gradually rotating closed just like this.

00:04:21,000 --> 00:04:27,000
Now if you're used to slicing this is going to feel incredibly awkward and very exaggerated,

00:04:27,000 --> 00:04:31,000
but what you're going to start to see is the ball is not going to curve to the right

00:04:31,000 --> 00:04:32,000
when we may contact.

00:04:32,000 --> 00:04:36,000
Once I have this feeling of the club face being more closed, but I'm monitoring ball

00:04:36,000 --> 00:04:37,000
flight.

00:04:37,000 --> 00:04:43,000
If it's not hooking like crazy or not going way to the left, if the ball is not curving

00:04:43,000 --> 00:04:46,000
very much, then I know the club face was actually square.

00:04:46,000 --> 00:04:50,000
And then what I can do is I can do more of a three-quarter swing or I can go all the way

00:04:50,000 --> 00:04:54,000
up to a full swing and try to recreate the same ball flight.

00:04:54,000 --> 00:04:59,000
That's one of the easiest go-to drills for getting a little bit more club face awareness

00:04:59,000 --> 00:05:01,000
and learning how to get out of a slice.

00:05:01,000 --> 00:05:04,000
Go number two is going to be looking at the path.

00:05:04,000 --> 00:05:10,000
So now if I've got a stick on the ground here and I'm going to put an object, this could

00:05:10,000 --> 00:05:12,000
be a golf ball.

00:05:12,000 --> 00:05:16,000
In this case I often use an impact bag and have golfers train that.

00:05:16,000 --> 00:05:20,000
Sometimes I'll use the tissue box or yoga block or something like that.

00:05:20,000 --> 00:05:25,000
But I'm going to put a golf ball at about a 30-degree angle out to the right.

00:05:25,000 --> 00:05:28,000
And now setting up to the golf ball, I've got the stick aimed at my target.

00:05:28,000 --> 00:05:35,000
I'm going to practice bringing the toe of the club into that impact bag or towards that

00:05:35,000 --> 00:05:36,000
golf ball.

00:05:36,000 --> 00:05:40,000
So I'm going to feel like the club is going this way.

00:05:40,000 --> 00:05:44,000
If I'm used to slicing the ball, it would look more like this where the blur of the

00:05:44,000 --> 00:05:47,000
club is coming way to the left of that golf ball.

00:05:47,000 --> 00:05:53,000
So now what's going to happen is I'm feeling like this with my arms where the club

00:05:53,000 --> 00:05:57,000
face is more in a closed position, just like this.

00:05:57,000 --> 00:05:59,000
But then it's traveling out that way.

00:05:59,000 --> 00:06:03,000
My goal is that overdo it and try to hit some hooks.

00:06:03,000 --> 00:06:07,000
What I'm going to find is as I start to turn my body, it's going to make it harder and

00:06:07,000 --> 00:06:12,000
harder for me to actually hit that object, whether it's an impact bag or yoga block.

00:06:12,000 --> 00:06:17,000
We got the club face in the little 9-3 drill, we got the path in this little right path

00:06:17,000 --> 00:06:18,000
drill.

00:06:18,000 --> 00:06:21,000
The last one is going to be rhythm and tempo.

00:06:22,000 --> 00:06:31,000
rhythm and tempo, we're going to get a feeling of a pump down and then a release through.

00:06:31,000 --> 00:06:37,000
So instead of hitting straight from the top, we're going to feel like the club is dropping

00:06:37,000 --> 00:06:41,000
until it gets to about waist height and then I'm going to swing through.

00:06:41,000 --> 00:06:47,000
So we're going to try and exaggerate this where we're going to feel like it's really

00:06:47,000 --> 00:06:51,000
slow in transition until we get to about here and then it's really fast down through

00:06:51,000 --> 00:06:56,000
the ball instead of fast early.

00:06:56,000 --> 00:07:03,000
So rhythm wise, I'm going to feel a one to the back swing, two down to here and then

00:07:03,000 --> 00:07:07,000
a three being the release down at the bottom.

00:07:07,000 --> 00:07:13,000
So it will look something, one, two, three.

00:07:13,000 --> 00:07:22,000
So I'm feeling like the two is happening as a long slow transition.

00:07:22,000 --> 00:07:29,000
So I'm making a full turn, letting it drop their transition and then trying to apply the

00:07:29,000 --> 00:07:30,000
speed early.

00:07:30,000 --> 00:07:32,000
Or sorry, late.

00:07:32,000 --> 00:07:36,000
If I'm used to slicing the ball then I'm probably applying the speed early.

00:07:36,000 --> 00:07:40,000
One of the principles that we use at golf smart academy is you want to use some type of

00:07:40,000 --> 00:07:45,000
feedback to accurately diagnose what's going on but then you have to be willing to experiment

00:07:45,000 --> 00:07:48,000
with different solutions in order to solve it.

00:07:48,000 --> 00:07:54,000
If you're slicing the ball, one of these three will absolutely solve it but you might

00:07:54,000 --> 00:07:57,000
feel like you're closing and not actually be closing.

00:07:57,000 --> 00:08:00,000
You might have to feel like you closed it with the right hand and set a left hand.

00:08:00,000 --> 00:08:05,000
I've got drills to help work through any of the different pieces that might relate to getting

00:08:05,000 --> 00:08:08,000
the path more to the right, getting the club face closed or working on your rhythm and

00:08:08,000 --> 00:08:09,000
sequencing.

00:08:10,000 --> 00:08:12,000
If you're struggling with it, just know that there's hope.

00:08:12,000 --> 00:08:17,000
Get an accurate diagnosis, either by reading ball flight or even using video and when you

00:08:17,000 --> 00:08:22,000
have an accurate diagnosis, if you play around with the results, you will fix your problem

00:08:22,000 --> 00:08:23,000
and get better.
