Block v. Random Practice: How to Use Drills?

Hi Tyler,
I’m finding myself spending 90%+ of practice time on block practice using drills. I feel compelled to see the change in video before going to random practice. But, some moves are very difficult, and I’ll just revert to the old swing in random practice.
Is it better to move to random practice even when you’re not succeeding in getting the move down? Any advice on practice techniques that get the brain to accept changes?
Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe,
I think the ratio of blocked vs random is pretty varied player to player. If I'm getting ready for an event, then I tend to increase the randomness, but if I'm working on something specific, I might do an entire session of blocked practice. I also might be more patient with my score if I'm working on one area intently.
As far as "revert to the old" we can use that to our advantage. If you get in a groove where you are hitting lots of good shots, we can use random to help you lose it so you can find it again. I think finding it and losing it is part of a good practice.
Happy Golfing,

Hi Joe,
I had one other thought yesterday while teaching. A good bridge is doing block practice, but adding the preshot routine. Basically, adding walking in and getting set up to the block practice. That can be a slightly harder test than just the standard blocked practice, but not quite as difficult as random practice.
Good luck, happy golfing,
Tyler
